About a month ago, I deliberately tried to support a friend doing the London Marathon. I have limited interest and experience in running, my interest lies in having the experience of supporting someone who’s ambition is to run at least 4 of the Abbott World Marathon Majors this year. I think it’s very relevant to my own professional world.
I have long had this thought of supporting early-stage nature-based solutions ventures as akin to supporting ultra-marathon runners. Founders are the resilient long-distance runners, passionate about their mission, yet facing immense challenges on a long, arduous course. This is where venture builders step in, acting as their dedicated support crew.
Just as a marathon runner needs precise hydration and nutrition, shared services provide the essential fuel – business development, financial, and HR expertise – allowing founders to conserve energy for their core mission. Imagine an entrepreneur-in-residence as a seasoned running partner, running alongside the founder, offering hands-on operational guidance and strategic problem-solving. This isn’t just advice from the sidelines; it’s active participation, helping them navigate treacherous terrain.
Venture builders offer the “aid stations” of strategic guidance and mentorship, ensuring the runner stays on course, validates their path, and connects with vital resources (investors). This holistic support system de-risks the journey, allowing these vital nature-based solutions to reach the finish line, delivering scalable impact for both planet and business sustainability.
This is what Matt Leggett, Yuni Yunseong Choi and I are trying to do in Terratai. Let’s hope we can help more venture founders reach their finish line.
